With burgeoning markets in wireless and signal
processing, September was a great month for DSP developments
and new wireless standards, especially Zigbee . Texas
Instruments , for example, announced their new Code
Composer Studio Tuning Edition Integrated Development
Environment . The product's centerpiece is its dashboard,
a user-friendly configurable display, made up of four windows
- the Advice Window, the Goals Window, the Profile Setup and
the Profile Viewer. Release here
, with full product information here
. Amidst the strong demand for DSP services, eInfochips
announced 'DSP Karma,' a package of design services designed
to speed DSP development. Release here
.
Programmable logic implementations of DSP as well as DSP
intellectual property were also hot topics, especially at the
recently concluded GSPx
conference. Xilinx
announced version 6.3i of their System Generator for
DSP aimed at easing DSP designs into their Virtex-4
Platform FPGAs. Release here
. And competitor Altera
introduced version 2.2 of its DSP Builder development
tool. Supporting Altera's DSP MegaCore® intellectual property
(IP) portfolio, the new version also supports MATLAB 7 and
Simulink 6 software packages included in The MathWorks Release
14. Release here
.
On the IP front, RF
Engines Limited demonstrated their industry leading Fast
Fourier Transform (FFT) cores at GSPx . Release here
. Lattice
Semiconductor Corporation and its IP partner, CAST
Incorporated announced intellectual property (IP) support
for the new LatticeECP-DSP™ ('EConomy Plus DSP') and
LatticeEC™ ('EConomy') FPGA device families. Release here
. And StarCore
announced the new StarCore
SC2200 and SC2400 synthesizable digital signal processor (DSP)
cores .
With respect to Zigbee , here are
some of the news highlights:
As an emerging standard, Zigbee seems ideal for low-cost,
low power embedded applications and is worth watching closely.

PCI
Express seems to have begun its osmosis into the embedded
space as vendors compete with new announcements and
applications almost daily. Electronic
Trend Publications began September with a new research
report, Advanced
Bus and Interface Markets and Trends justifying the
trend, and SBS
Technologies announced the first expansion systems to take
advantage of the speed of PCI Express for existing PCI-X and
PCI cards. The novel implementation allows designs an easy
migration path to PCI Express. Release here
.
CATC
, a leader in protocol analysis, enhanced their PCI Express
family of products, the PE Trainer EML, and Finisar
announced the availability of a 16-bit bus analyzer pod for
its RX-252 analyzer. The company also specializes heavily in
protocol analysis tools. Release here
and here
.
TEK
Microsystems hopes to allow an easy migration path for PCI
Express users, with its JazzStream Family, the first family of
products to combine the VXS and XMC standards with the PCI
Express switched fabric interconnect on a VME 6U platform.
Release here
. There was also an announcement by Xilinx
and Philips
of PCI Express cooperation ( here
) as well as a new third-party development tool kit from
NitAl
for FPGA PCI Express development. Release here
.

eg3.com 's mission is to research, identify, and
promote cool new Web resources - white papers, demo's,
seminar's, free code. etc. Here are the top new Web sites we
have found in the last month. On the PCI Express topic, don't
miss PCI
Express Community , an Intel
-sponsored infomercial on PCI Express. For security issues,
keep an eye on the Trusted
Computing Group (TCG) , which is also beginning to
penetrate the embedded space as security concerns grow. Microsoft
continues to pump money into WindowsCE and Windows XP
Embedded, witness coverage on Channel
9 as well as pseudo-independent Web blogs such as Aaron
Stebner's .
